With so many engineering aspirants in India and, the question of what after B.Tech has gained even more important than ever. A survey suggests that India generates around 1.1 – 1.2 million engineers every year while around 1.5 million sign up to take B.Tech as their 4-year course undergraduate degree. Now, providing jobs after B.Tech every year to so many applicants is realistically next to impossible, so people tend to enhance their educational qualifications by opting for higher education if they don’t get placed in a company of their choice.
Career after B.Tech. What are the options?
Once the course is complete, and students get their B. Tech degree and begin their life as freshers who lack expertise, most of them don’t get placed from their respective colleges or don’t take the placements because it isn’t up to their liking. So they start feeling as if their career is going downhill and are usually demoralized by this fact.
The best thing to do at such a time is to have a clear head and focus on the various options ahead, including:
- Taking part in M.Tech programs through GATE, JAM, etc.
- Another popular career choice among engineering graduates is studying management and doing MBA for entering this field. Students give MBA exams post-B. Tech or even M.Tech to have a better chance of climbing up the ranks in an organization.
- Engineers have also started opting to become entrepreneurs seeing the recent success of engineer entrepreneurs like Vijay Mansukhani (ONIDA founder), Vishal Shah (Storia. Foods & Beverages).
- Campus placements are a good option for engineering students, provided that they maintain a good CGPA score throughout the 4 years, take part in extracurricular activities, and prepare well.
- Trying to get into the private sector jobs through research, walk-in applications, and by registering in reputed job portals to look for jobs relevant to one’s expertise area.
- M.Tech Career: After completion of their B.Tech course, students who opt for Masters in their field go for an M.Tech course in the hope of getting in the reputed PSU’s (Public Sector Undertakings) jobs. The M.Tech course lasts for 2 years, and the fees range from as low as INR 25,000 to INR 2 lakhs per annum in India.
- Some M.Tech subjects include Applied Operations Research, Astronautics, Financial Engineering, Structural Engineering, etc. They are highly practical and knowledge-based as it is meant for specialization in a particular field.
- There are national-level/ state level entrance exams for M.Tech admissions like :
- GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)
- UPSEE (Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination)
- Post the M.Tech course; people opt for further higher studies in the form of a Ph.D. to enhance to give their M.Tech careers an extra kick in the field of research.

- Computer Science engineer– A computer science engineer is involved in several aspects of computing, from the design of individual microprocessors, personal computers, supercomputers to circuit designs.
- Mechanical Engineer– A mechanical engineer helps design power-producing machines such as electric generators, steam and gas turbines, as well as refrigeration and air conditioning units.
- Automobile Engineer- They are responsible for designing automobile parts and machines, therefore helping them form a blueprint for new and better automobiles.
- Software developer- The software develops and analyzes user needs and then designs tests and develops softwares for meeting those needs.
- Electronics and Communication engineer– They cover jobs over a wide aspect of design, service, network planning of electronic items, and communication technology. They are thus, mainly responsible for designing, developing, and testing electronic equipment.
- Electrical Engineer– An electric engineer is responsible for designing and application of equipment for devices and systems that use electricity to run.
They get jobs in various sectors, including aerospace, automobile, and even the computer industry, as all have devices requiring electricity.
- There are various more jobs that a B.Tech graduate can get depending upon their fields.
Going through the tough B. Tech course for 4 years and then choosing higher studies has been rewarding for the engineers so far, which can be seen in most highly ranked employees of famous PSU’s and even private corporations related to this industry. Although an M.Tech degree followed by an MBA is considered one of the safest paths to success in this field, many students have achieved a lot of success post-B. Tech itself by either qualifying to be part of multimillion-dollar companies like Google or by being entrepreneurs and bringing their innovative products and ideas into the market, but to be someone like the latter requires a lot of caliber and potential which one should be able to realize themselves by the time their B. Tech degree ends to get a clear idea of their career after B.Tech.
